If you didn’t grow up riding motocross, don’t worry, it’s never too late to start. When I began riding motocross several years ago, I was overwhelmed by the variety of gear available and didn’t fully understand what I needed and why. This guide will cover the basics and delve into essential motocross gear, starting with the most important piece: head protection.
Head Protection
A motocross helmet differs significantly from a regular street helmet. It features a peak visor on top to block roost, shield you from branches on the trail, and occasionally shade you from the sun. Look for helmets with plastic screws or an easy-release system on the visor. This design prevents neck injuries by allowing the visor to break away if it catches on something.
Motocross helmets also offer excellent ventilation, which is crucial because motocross riding generates a lot of body heat. Proper airflow helps keep you cool and comfortable. Most importantly, helmets protect against various types of impacts, from soft sand to hard clay. Some helmets include technology to prevent rotational impact injuries, which can significantly reduce the risk of brain injuries.
Goggles
Protecting your eyes is critical, making goggles a valuable piece of gear. They shield your eyes from debris, branches, rain, and anything else that could impair your vision. Goggles come with different lens colors for sun protection and clearer vision. Features to look for include stabilizers for a better fit, wide straps for security, and a wide field of vision to see your surroundings better.
Neck Braces
Neck braces are designed to prevent neck and spinal injuries by reducing compression during an accident. While some riders find them uncomfortable, they offer an additional layer of protection, particularly against spinal compression. Ensure the brace fits well with your existing gear and sits comfortably on your shoulders without hindering movement.
Roost Protectors and Chest Guards
Roost protectors and chest guards offer different levels of coverage. Roost protectors are lightweight and primarily defend against debris, making them popular among motocross riders. Chest guards, or body armor, provide more extensive protection, including coverage for biceps and forearms, making them ideal for trail riders who encounter more obstacles like trees and rocks.
Knee Braces vs. Knee Guards
Knee braces and guards serve different purposes. Knee guards protect against impacts with a hard TPU shell and straps to keep them in place. Knee braces, however, offer more extensive protection against torsional and lateral knee injuries and hyperextension. They have a pivot point and strong spine on each side for added stability.
Boots
Motocross boots are highly protective, designed to prevent torsional and lateral injuries while accommodating knee guards and braces. They have rigid TPU protection around the shin and boot for abrasion resistance and impact protection. Higher-end models like the Alpinestars Tech 7 offer more flexibility and comfort compared to entry-level models like the Tech 3.
Jerseys, Pants, and Gloves
When choosing jerseys, pants, and gloves, consider your riding style and conditions. Brands offer different lines catering to various needs. For example, Fly Racing’s F-16 gear is durable and breathable for beginners. The Evolution DST line offers greater flexibility and durability for trail riders, while the Lite line focuses on performance for professional racers.
Remember, the right gear not only enhances your performance but also significantly improves your safety on the track or trail.
